Of all the stupid things...

This one takes the cake.

I just got a note from an academics adviser at the University of Alaska, Anchorage saying that I can't take a dietitics class because...wait for it...I haven't taken their introductory biology classes. Seriously. Because I have no "direct equivalent" in my transfer credits (from my FOUR degrees, THREE of which are in biological sciences) I would have to attempt a petition to be allowed to possibly take the class without it. Note. The classes in question are Bio 111/112. I teach Bio 352. Note the higher number in the one I teach...I am teaching upper-division biology, but am not qualified to take a class because I haven't taken the more basic class. I have a PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, people. And yes, I have taken human physiology before. (Admittedly, I have never taken basic anatomy, but I have taken classes that required a basic knowledge of anatomy so I *think* I could handle it). It might be worth noting that the dietitics class I wanted to take was pretty basic, and I have taken a basic nutrition class before.

*headdesk*

I knew UAA had issues, but seriously? As I put in my note back to the adviser, I am more likely to teach the class in question than to take it. (And, yes, I had already told him I was a professor of biology). Red tape, much? Excuse me while I go bang my head against a wall.

  1. The obvious question is why you would want to take their stupid class--but I'm sure you have your reasons. But I certainly don't see anything the University gains by keeping you out of it. Bureaucracy. But please don't beat up your poor head just because someone else is stupid.

  3. I'm sorry. My seriously messed up computer seems to submit every comment that I make twice.

    1. I don't think it's your computer. I'm having the same trouble. Blogger is having issues. As to why I want to take their class...I work for the Division of Public Health, and tobacco and obesity are the number one and two killers these days. I've worked in tobacco prevention for the past two years, and thought dietetics would help if I wanted to work in obesity prevention.
