Yet another life goal thwarted.

Note to concerned parents:
I do not normally post pictures
of my legs on the Internet.
Okay, so it's not a major life goal, but I was really hoping to make it to my 30th birthday before I had to get a cane. But apparently, when you come in to the doctors looking like this, and saying that you've fallen several times due to lupus induced vertigo... well, the doctors get insistent.

So, I dutifully got the prescription for a cane, and went to the medical supply store. Now, while I am tall I am not that tall, so I expected that I would have a number of choices when it came to canes. The first sign that I might be wrong came when the saleswoman walked up. The woman was 5' tall, if that.

As it turns out, I can get canes that will bear way more than twice my weight easily. I can get canes that will bear way more than five times my weight without too much trouble. What I cannot find are multiple canes for people my height. There was a grand total of one in the entire store. I was not amused; we are talking about an accessory here, after all!

So, if you happen to know a good source for canes they don't need to bear much weight, but do need to extend to at least 37-39 inches (it changes depending on my shoes), please let me know. In the meantime, my cane and I will be watching you...

  1. I love the eyes. I'm sorry you have to start using a cane. Bummer. But when I looked at the photo, my first fear was that your life goal was to flash your leg on TV like Angelina Jolie. Can you get a prescription for a straw hat to go with the cane, and claim that you like to dance? I see you eventually having a wardrobe of canes. One with a monster face, one with a carved giraffe head, one with a knitted lace cover, etc. I know that you can keep a cane from being just a cane.

    1. Um...no. Different life goal entirely. Mind you, I wouldn't mind Angelina's dress. It would give my mother a heart attack, but I bet I'd look good in it.

Actually, right now I'm looking for a "blend in with my professional attire/interview suit" sort of thing. Maybe in the future fun canes can be an option, but that's not the stage of life I'm in right now.

    2. ...although my dermatologist did my usual cancer check today, looked at my bruises and said, "What on earth did you run into?" to which my response, "Everything," kind of summed up why I followed orders and got the cane in the first place. *grumbles*

  2. Drats! Well, monster eyes will help. Another friend has to use 2 canes (but not particularly tall) and has quite an assortment of colorful painted ones. I've got quite an assortment of fun fabrics is you want to design a "sleeve" to slip over yours.

    1. I've also got more ribbon and fabric than you could, uh, shake a cane at. :) But right now I'm looking for something that looks good with my interview suit so that I look nice when I go to Accepted Student Day at Hopkins and/or Harvard. Less with the fun, more with the boring black or wood.

I didn't use permanent glue on the eyes, so they dropped off pretty quickly, I'm afraid.

    2. Speaking of glue....I found a small, light weight, dual-temp glue gun at JoAnn Fabrics. Could you use it?

    3. Oooh, yes. Definitely. I've been looking for just such a thing, as a matter of fact.

    4. OK, I'll send it with your gloves. Hope to finish them this weekend.

    5. Thank you so much! I have started branching out from sewing (I sew many of my own clothes) to other crafts. I'm finding that using glue rather than hand stitching things makes my carpal tunneled wrists much happier! So, once again, many, many thanks!

  3. Love the googly eyes, even if they didn't last. Remember your Dad's Cat in the Hat hat that he wears every Halloween? He glued bloodshot googly eyes on it years ago, and now it only has one. Which actually is kind of even better, when you're going for that effect.

    1. BTW...the latest scarf you so kindly made...well, I made a couple of small scarf pins to go with it. One is a respectable flower that complements the color. The other is a white puffy thing with googly eyes. I told my boss that I thought her 5 year old fashion consultant would most approve of that one. She agreed.

  4. In the vicarious window shopping department, I found a wooden 38" (but not adjustable) with the kind of handle I ignorantly think looks comfortable.

I more like that they sell the cane with flames on it, like the one used by the Hugh Laurie character in House.

    1. I like that first one! Can't say I'm a huge flames fan, though. I'm too new at this cane business to want to stand out that much. :)
