Update: it's alive! (Sort of…)

Hello concerned friends,

You will be relieved (I hope) to hear that I did survive my surgery yesterday. Unfortunately, note the word “surgery,” as in singular. I was all ready to have both wrists operated on at once to get it over with. Sadly, my body had other plans. My platelet count dropped fairly precipitously the day before the surgery. While hematology still thought it was safe to operate, the surgeon wasn't comfortable risking a double hematoma. So I have to, and I quote, “just go through all this sh** again.”

This is just a bruise from one of the IVs!
The surgery itself went fairly easily once they gave me the drug that killed Michael Jackson. Apparently, I'm resistant to most other sedatives, and since they have to put a tourniquet on your wrist for several minutes, it's not something you want to go through unsedated. But they did give me the drug, and I was fine. A very kind and caring friend took care of me; she drove me there, spent the whole time working on her laptop from the waiting room, picked up my prescriptions so I wouldn't have to, and made sure I got home okay. Bless her heart! I would publicly name and thank her but I know she would prefer that I not do so.

So that's how things stand: I'm still recovering, my hand and wrist hurt, and I don't feel great. But I've been well taking care of, and a coworker even has been so kind as to ensure a nightly milkshake delivery! Another friend brought over smoothies beforehand, so, I can't complain. On a slightly tangential but mostly related topic, thank you, DebbieR, for the wonderful box you sent. I can't try the gloves on yet for obvious reasons, but I'm already plotting all sorts of mischief and mayhem to be wrought with the googly eyes and hot glue gun! So thank you, very very much. When they are unbandage my hand I will try on the gloves; in the meantime I can only say that they are gorgeous!

  1. Oh cool! So glad the package got there. Those colorful eyes cracked me up so hope they're making you smile a bit. So sorry your body didn't cooperate with your plan, but at least you have one wrist done. Looking forward to the crafty mayhem when you feel better.

    1. I showed off my new collection of googly eyes to my friends who had come over to bring me chocolate milkshakes. I love these friends. They were, of course, very impressed. The eyelashes on some of the eyes particularly cracked one of my friends up!

Thank you, once again! I tried the glove on one hand, and it's lovely. The second one will have to wait till they take the bandaging off later today… or possibly even later than that. It's still a little tender.

    2. Correction due to voice-recognition software error: chocolate and milkshakes. Not just the one chocolate milkshake. Awesome friends, these.

    1. Thanks, Sharon. This surgery is supposed to heal pretty quickly, so hopefully it won't be a big deal. And thank you for the compliment; I enjoy finding outfits that look nice on me. It's one of the few things I can control!

    1. To be honest with you, I can only remember one or two times in the last ten years that my platelet count has been normal. I strive for a count high enough to prevent spontaneous bleeding or bruising. Thank you for your kind wishes, though!

  4. I recently had a colonoscopy and they gave me the "Michael Jackson" drug. Apparently it works a whole lot better if you're being careful with your body and have several doctors standing over you, etc. I'm glad it worked for you, but I'm really sorry you have to do this again. With all of your baggage, it is harder on you than that stupid colonoscopy was on me. I wish you good health and good chocolate.
